Independence Community Garden

Independence Community Garden is located in Ward 2 across from the Air and Space Museum, on a triangular-shaped piece of land bounded by 6th St SW, Independence Ave, and Maryland Ave SW.  The garden is made up of 38 plots of various shapes and sizes, and there is a 2-3 year waiting list to get a plot.  There is no fence around the garden, and gardeners expressed frustration with tourists eating their vegetables.  However, others saw its prime location as an opportunity to discuss with passersby the transformation of vacant public space into productive land for cultivating food.

Unfortunately, on September 21, 2006 the site was officially approved as the future site of theEisenhower Memorial, and the garden will be paved over when they are ready to construct Eisenhower Square.  In the meantime, contact Kendall LePoer (Garden Coordinator) with any questions at
